Internet For Beginners
The first thing needed to view the Internet is an Internet browser. Above is an image of a web page displayed in Microsoft Internet Explorer (Microsoft Internet Explorers a common Internet browser. Netscape explorer is also a browser that is widely used). On the image above, you can see the horizontal and vertical scroll bars. These are used when the page displayed does not fit in the window. To view parts of the web page that are out of the view of the window, click either of the arrows at either end of the scroll bar to go to the part of the page you want. Also on this image, you can see some web page buttons also known as links. When a link is clicked on, it will take you to another page. For example, if you clicked on the "English" link on this page, it would take you to the English page on this site. When you put you mouse arrow over a link, it will usually turn into a hand.
Above is what you see at the top of your browser. Here you can see an address bar with an address typed in it. If you know a the address of a page (for example, www.rushworthp-12.vic.edu.au), you can type it in and go straight to that page. You can also see menu buttons on the image above (File, Edit, View, etc). When these buttons are clicked on, a menu is brought down. The navigation buttons (Back, Forard, Stop, etc) are used to navigate you way around the Internet.
What you see above is an Internet search engine. In this case the search engin is Yahoo, which is a very widly used search engin. Other search engins include Alta Vista, Dog Pile and Excite. Search engins are used to search for web pages on a particular topic. For example, I have typed in the word "Internet" in the Alta Vista search engine. If I clicked submit, a list of web pages would come up on the screen. From there, you would just have to click on the title of on of the web pages shown and it would take you to that web page.
